Before May 6th, I welcomed visitors to this website by saying that I thought the 2010 general election gave us an opportunity for fresh start, for real change both locally and nationally.
Well, the local change didn’t happen this time but it was a close fight!

I am very grateful to the 23,364 people who voted for me to represent them at Westminster as West Dorset’s first Liberal Democrat MP. That was a massive vote of confidence in the Liberal Democrats and West Dorset remains a very marginal constituency.
Liberal Democrats are now in government
The events immediately afterwards were even more exciting than the election itself! I welcome the coalition government because it seems to me to be the closest reflection of what the electorate were saying they wanted. Certainly here in West Dorset people were telling me on the doorstep that they definitely did not want Labour to get back into government but they were not very keen on the Conservatives either. I lost count of the number of times I heard people say that they wished the politicians would work together, taking the best ideas from each party. That is now just what is happening!
As a Liberal Democrat, I am of course delighted that five of my Party colleagues are part of the government and especially that Nick Clegg is our Deputy Prime Minister. I am also very proud that so many Liberal Democrat policies appeared in the Queen’s Speech, including our major priorities: fair taxes, a fair start for children, a green and sustainable economy, and a comprehensive clean up of politics.

A fair future creating jobs by making Britain greener
- Break up the banks and get them lending again to protect real businesses
- Honesty about the tough choices needed to cut the deficit
- Green growth and jobs that last by investing in infrastructure
A fair chance for every child
- Ensure children get the individual attention they need by cutting class sizes
- Made possible by investing £2.5 billion in schools targeted to help struggling pupils
- Give schools the freedom to make the right choices for their pupils
A fair deal by cleaning up politics
- Put trust back into politics by giving you the right to sack corrupt MPs
- Restore and protect hard-won British civil liberties with a Freedom Bill
- Overhaul Westminster completely: fair votes, an elected House of Lords, all politicians to pay full British taxes
